Make up is used by women all over the world to help them feel more confident and comfortable. From a basic look with foundation and powder to more advanced smoky eye shadow and contouring, there are so many different looks and styles that can be achieved.

Despite this, few women realise just how far make up can go and the amazing looks that can be made. Mimi Choi from Vancouver, Canada is a makeup artist and thanks to her optical illusion looks, has earned herself 307,000 followers on Instagram and counting.

Before discovering her talent, Mimi studied to be a teacher and had worked in a preschool for three years, though she wasn’t enjoying herself fully.

“I felt like my creativity was suppressed. I enjoyed teaching but I wasn’t completely happy,” she said.

“I needed a new challenge.”

She quickly found one. Once she left the classroom, she was free to experiment with her brushes at home, trying new looks and techniques.

Realising the potential for a new career, she enrolled at a local beauty college hoping to gain more skills.

“I’ve always been arty and had done bridal makeup before, which people really liked. I’d not done anything as crazy as the work I do now, though.”

Many hours and hours of practice later, things really started to get exciting for Mimi just before Halloween.

“I wanted to do something different for October 31, so I had a look on Instagram and found a photo of a woman, who looked like her face had cracked.”

“I’d never tried any kind of crazy make-up on myself, but I just got out my black and white eye liner and gave it a go.”

Choi creates her optical illusions by expertly utilising shadows and light to create different perspectives which trick the brain, making her clients look like they have been split in half, falling apart or even turning them into crazy looking creatures and animals. She can make flat surfaces appear 3D and uses this to create her art which is now trending worldwide.

Mimi is often inspired by work of other artists, so if you are feeling inspired to try some of these looks, or attempt some of your own, she lists the brands and products she uses for specific looks on her Instagram posts.
